Southern Tennis

History of Tennis Southern

Established in late 2007 as part of Tennis NZ’s revitalisation project Tennis Southern Region (TSR) is one of six Regional Centres.

TSR covers the lower portion of the South Island and includes South Canterbury, North Otago, Otago and Southland. Based in Dunedin at the Logan Park Tennis facility it is responsible for the delivery of tennis programmes, competitions, and tournaments in the region. The Regional Centres provide support to tennis clubs within the region to ensure there is a strong base at grassroots level. Tennis NZ provides training and support for the TSR and the other Regional Centres and meets regularly with staff from around New Zealand to encourage the development of strong relationships and networks. The Regional Centres provide valuable input into the strategic direction of Tennis NZ and the development of national programmes.

Under the revitalisation project two types of alignment were available to Associations. The first was to remain as an association and align to the Regional Centre. The second was to completely transfer into the Regional Centre and wind up the association. A Special General Meeting of the Otago Tennis Association (OTA) on 7 May 2008 unanimously approved changes to the structure of tennis in the Otago area as a result of the establishment of Tennis Southern. The changes resulted in the OTA becoming the Logan Park Tennis Foundation Inc. and having an amended Constitution. The Logan Park Tennis Foundation is an asset holding body with its main responsibility being the Logan Park Tennis facility. The investment OTA had in the Edgar Centre in Dunedin has now transferred to the Logan Park Tennis Foundation. Clubs in Otago become members directly of TSR. The final structure of Tennis Southern is:

  • North Otago – remains as an association.
  • Otago – becomes an asset holding entity responsible for the Logan Park Tennis facility and other assets of Otago Tennis Association.
  • South Canterbury – remains as an association.
  • Southland – remains as an association although there is expectation from all parties that Queenstown and Wanaka clubs will affiliate directly with Tennis Southern.

Agreement has been reached from each remaining Association in the region on the Tennis Southern Constitution and Memorandum of Understanding.
