As of January 1 2009, Tennis New Zealand has launched a Nationwide policy of recognising ‘Registered and Certified’ Coaches. This policy affects all Tennis New Zealand and Regional staff involved in coaching in addition to club coaches, private business operators and anyone who coaches (in any capacity) in New Zealand.
The goal of this policy is to raise the standard of coaching services delivered in New Zealand and ensure that anyone actively coaching in any capacity has completed a recognised coaching course, is a member of Tennis Coaches New Zealand (TCNZ) and thereby signed a 'code of ethics' and passed a police check. The benefits of such will ensure anyone who receive tennis coaching do so in an environment where there is a 'professional duty of care'. The best way to achieve this is to require all coaches in New Zealand to be, as a minimum, Registered.
Tennis New Zealand has set the following actions and deadlines which Tennis Southern fully supports.
Tennis NZ, Regional and Association Coaches
All Tennis NZ, Regional Association Coaches (RAC), Regional Development Managers (RDM), National Performance Centre (NPC), Regional Performance Centre (RPC) and Tennis NZ Tour Coaches are required to be Registered by March 1 2009 and Certified by July 1 2011.
Anyone who actively coaches (in any capacity) at a NPC / RPC Venue be Registered by March 1 2009 and Certified by July 1 2011.
Coaches who fail to become Registered by the due date will not be permitted to offer coaching services at NPC / RPC Venues and Programs or eligible to travel as a TNZ Touring Coach. They will also be ineligible to be listed on the TNZ “Find-A-Coach” website.
The only exception to this will be coaches who are currently engaged in roles who can indicate a specific and definitive plan as to becoming registered and certified, including course enrolment, deposit paid, TCNZ membership, first aid course enrolment and police check underway at the soonest possible opportunity, noting that a full outline of courses and other requirements will be availed to them.
Anyone actively coaching in New Zealand
Anyone who is actively coaching (in any capacity) at an affiliated club or operating a private business must be Registered by May 1 2009.
